recipe box

I’m using this post to introduce a new summer blog feature: recipes from this green recipe box:

The recipe box was given to me by Grandma V on one of my visits to the farm. I don’t remember the exact details, but it’s either an extra recipe box that she had sitting around, or it came from a relative. I’m certain that it comes from someone in the family because I recognize many of the “this recipe came from” names written on the recipe cards inside.

I haven’t tried any of the recipes yet, but some of the cookies look interesting. Oh, and if you click through to the big version of this image, I just want to say that I didn’t realize what was sticking up out of the box when I took the picture. I guess the recipe got stuck in backwards, so what you’re seeing here is the back of a recipe clipped from a local farm-related publication called “The Cooperator”.

coincidence or not, it’s nice to be called wonderful!

btw, is there a good recipe for lemon cake in there? I’m in need of one.

That’s so funny, J. One of my non-work summer projects is to start my own recipe box. I wanted to get some of those fancy “From the Kitchen of” cards, but I haven’t yet, so I’m just writing on big index cards. I love this! And I’m totally planning on stealing your recipes for my own box.

EB — some of these might be worth adding, but I can assure you that some will be posted more for their cultural and historical interest than because they are my favorite recipes.

leo — are you looking for a fancy lemon cake, or an easy lemon cake? Lemon really isn’t my thing, but on the fancy end of things, I see that the Cook’s Illustrated Best Recipe cookbook has a recipe for Lemon Chiffon Cake.

On the easy end of things, I have several small-town cookbooks with recipes for lemon cake that use jello and/or cake mix. Here’s one from my grandparent’s Lutheran church (submitted by my mom’s cousin’s ex-wife — I think).

    Lemon Cake

    3/4 cup cold water
    1 (3 oz.) pkg Jello
    4 eggs

    beat 2 minutes

    Add: yellow cake mix

    Add: 3/4 oil
    beat 2 minutes

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Poke holes in hot cake with a meat fork.

    Glaze:
    2 cups powdered sugar
    Juice of two lemons

Mix together and pour over hot cake.
